The Playwright’s Dilemma: Rethinking “Lullaby for Winnie” -Part 2: Ownership and Artistic Vision

March 18, 2025

I keep coming back to a fundamental truth I've mentioned before in this blog: ultimately, it's my play. I know what I want the major dramatic questions to be. Would this suggested change alter that? Somewhat—but there's only one way to find out if it would make the play noticeably better. And I want "Lullaby for Winnie" to be the best it can possibly be.

What if I revealed certain elements more slowly? What if I let the audience discover things more gradually rather than unload the suitcase at the beginning? There could be more moments of surprise, more emotional impact when revelations finally come. At the very least, exploring this approach might be an interesting exercise.
